Failure modes

Main causes of failure reported by XDCAM users, leading to a repair of corrupted files, are:

Software failures

  • Clip Browser bug makes clips unplayable when importing to AVID
  • XDCAM Transfer issues after rewrapping files for Final Cut Pro
  • Orphaned MP4 files in the BPAV folder structure
  • Metadata in BPAV CLPR clips folder not copied
Ex: .XML, .PPN, .BIM, .SMI files missing
  • Missing or malformed KLV in MXF container

Storage failures

  • Corruption while copying from CF card in nanoFlash recorder
  • Footage accidentally deleted before transfer to hard disk
  • A bridged clip between 2 cards did not get transferred
  • Card ejected too early from MxR adapter
  • Card is unreadable after shooting ends

The equipment used by customers is usually:

  • Camera Sony EX1, EX3, JVC GY-HM100, or through nanoFlash recorder
  • Sony SxS card or class 10 32GB Transcend SDHC card
  • Canon XF series (C300, XF305, XF300, XF105, XF100)

This doesn't imply that this equipment is not robust, just that it's the most frequently used.

Repairability

All different families (XDCAM HD, XDCAM EX and XDCAM HD422) as well as special applications like nanoFlash, are supported.

Footage is encoded using a Video track that is organized in keyframes and inter-frames.
XDCAM frames are not stored in playback order. The offset between decode time and display time is stored in a table.

Repair process consists of reindexing the video frames. Frame reordering task is simple when the pattern is predictable.

The Audio tracks often come in raw PCM 'sowt' or 'twos' formats, as for example 48kHz stereo 16 bits. Sometimes the audio has some overlapping between frames, thus requiring a special scraping process.

Rewrapping: MP4, MOV and MXF files

Since XDCAM HD422 introduction, the container used in XDCAM files is MXF.

Using our service, the repaired XDCAM clips are wrapped in same MXF container to make them indistinguishable from a non damaged file.

Only when using older flavors XDCAM HD and XDCAM EX, might be rewrapping needed.

Repaired files, presented as QuickTime .mov files, are not always properly supported on the Windows side.

But editing software (AVID, Edius, Vegas Pro, Premiere...) can import the repaired files, once rewrapped into .MXF files.

MXF MP4

In those cases we got you covered providing two different workflows to ingest the footage.
